Green bus boom takes Flanders by storm

23 Jul 2025 · Environment

Since 1 July 2025, public transport in Flanders, Belgium, has become significantly greener, thanks to the private bus sector.

In Flanders, 79 private bus companies, with 1,348 buses and 2,561 full-time drivers, run scheduled services for De Lijn, the public transport operator.

The fleet now includes 588 new fully electric buses, accounting for 36% of the total private bus fleet.

The electric buses are powered by 100% green electricity.

Private sector sets the tone

In January 2025, 16% of the private bus fleet was fully electric. The private sector has thus significantly accelerated its decarbonisation efforts, setting the tone for zero-emission bus transport in Flanders.

“1 July 2025 was a milestone for public transport in Flanders and a first for the private bus sector,” said FBAA CEO Pieter Van Bastelaere. This is the biggest greening wave in our history: we are increasing the share of electric buses in our fleet to 36%, more than doubling the number!”

“Private operators are firmly taking the lead in greening the bus fleet and are contributing more than ever to European climate goals. We will continue this transition to have all scheduled buses emission-free by 2035,” he added.

Private buses travel 80 million kilometres per year in Flanders, accounting for half of all public bus transport.
