Vision & Mission

Be the global leader in connecting societies with safe, efficient, green mobility and logistics

70 years of rising to every challenge

The International Road Transport Union (IRU) was born on 23 March 1948 in Geneva.

Our first mission? To help rebuild the devastated road transport infrastructure of war-torn Europe. No small task, but we’ve always been up for a challenge.

We started out as an alliance of national road transport associations from eight western European countries: Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.

We’ve grown a lot since then

For 70 years, we’ve been looking out for truck, bus, coach and cab operators worldwide. We’ve been driving economic growth by finding better, more sustainable ways to get everyone and everything to its right place.

Over those years, we’ve grown into a global operation with member associations and associate members in over 100 countries across all five continents.

Today, IRU brings together business, partnering with those who regulate, serve and use our industry by:

  • Being the trusted voice for mobility and logistics
  • Facilitating the transport of people and goods
  • Championing the excellence in road transport

It’s been quite a journey, but journeys are what we do best. We help the world get where it needs to be. And we always will.

Here’s a quick rundown of the things we do:

  • We promote good policies.
Along with all our active and associate members, we write, develop and promote policies that help towards our common goal – better, more sustainable road transport.

  • We keep transport operators updated.
We make sure they have the latest fuel prices, secure parking areas and legislative developments.

  • We monitor our industry closely.
Whether it’s legislation, policies, events or anything else that could affect the work we do. We watch, listen and respond.

  • We reflect on the big challenges.
Energy, competition, social responsibility. Anything that can shape the future of our world and our industry. We use the expert knowledge of our partners to always stay one step ahead.

  • We cooperate with the decision makers.
This is mostly Intergovernmental bodies, international organisations, and all stakeholders concerned by the road transport industry – including the general public. We help everyone have a voice in policy decisions.

  • We encourage public-private partnerships.
Such as the TIR Convention or transnational projects like the reopening of the Silk Road.
