Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) commits to improve road safety

Road safety brings benefits to transport efficiency

IRU Academy’s role in combatting road death and injury, and the benefits of improved safety to transport efficiency, were highlights at recent Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) meetings in Tehran.

Reinforcing the importance of road safety to commercial road transport operations, IRU was recognised for its work in setting international best practices and a road transport professional qualification framework for the industry.

IRU was also commended for its commitment to the UN Decade of Actions on Road Safety – a landmark resolution setting road safety goals for the current decade.

The presentations were part of the 8th Meeting of the Road Committee (RC) of ECO’s Transit Transport Coordination Council in Tehran.

Aiming to improve safety standards for the transport of dangerous goods by road, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan also updated the participants on the status of their ongoing accession to the agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR).

The Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) is an intergovernmental organisation, whose secretariat is based in Tehran, comprising; Islamic Repubic of Afghanistan, Republic of Azerbaijan, Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Republic of Tajikistan, Republic of Turkey, Turkmenistan and Republic of Uzbekistan.
