UNECE report backs fully digital TIR

23 May 2017

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has released a report of the Iran-Turkey UNECE-IRU eTIR pilot project, endorsing the digitalisation of the TIR system and encouraging further contracting parties to adopt digital transport operations.

Recently published under the UNECE’s GE1 documents, the report highlights the successes of the completed pilot project and encouraged Iran, Turkey – and other countries – to continue piloting digital TIR and to move towards full computerisation of the system.

Focusing on technical and practical aspects, the report follows continuing work by IRU to exchange information and facilitate a wider understanding of the benefits and operational issues relating to the new generation TIR.

A recent seminar held in Batumi, Georgia, devised a possible action plan for a fully electronic TIR procedure on the intermodal Ukraine-Georgia-Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan corridor.
