Road safety prioritised at IRU’s technical meetings

5 Oct 2017

With road traffic deaths numbering over 1.2 million annually and another 50 million serious injuries, recent IRU member meetings put the focus on advocacy, innovation and training to buck the trend.

IRU’s commitment to road safety and technical issues is evident in continuing work to develop advocacy, networking and innovative services related to road safety and technical issues, together with its members and the industry to help define and support technical and legal standards, training of drivers and operators, and raising awareness.

The respective meetings gathered members of the Commission on Road Safety and Commission on Technical Affairs and put the focus on recommendations for Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS), new fleet management solutions, periodical inspections and vehicle fire safety (notably for buses).

Technical issues on the agenda included truck platooning, new tyre types, high capacity vehicles and the electrification of bus fleets.

At both events, work performed through EU collaborative projects – such as i-HeERO and SAFER-LC – were highlighted.
