50 year milestone for safety conventions prompts fresh plan of action

19 Mar 2018

The UN’s Global Forum for Road Traffic Safety today celebrates five decades of UN road safety conventions, including the milestone Vienna Convention (Convention on Road Signs and Signals) of 1968.

IRU attended special semi centennial events marking this important milestone, which included discussions on the establishment and management of a UN Global Road Safety Fund – to be announced at the forthcoming UN General Assembly on 12-13 April 2018 - alongside a special focus on the improvement of road safety in South East Asia and the road safety of autonomous vehicles.

Bilateral discussions with delegates from Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand highlighted best practices to address human error – currently the main cause of accidents involving heavy commercial vehicles – with the importance of training transport professionals underlined.
