IRU has delivered a training initiative in Tunisia to boost local capacity in safe, efficient and eco-friendly driving.
The Swisscontact-funded project focused on training trainers in both the theory and practice of ECOeffective driving, with particular emphasis on road safety, economic efficiency and environmental performance. Key benefits of ECOeffective driving include reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
At the heart of the initiative was IRU’s ECOeffect Driver Programme methodology. Participants were introduced to the programme’s training approach and the use of its monitoring tool, helping them build the skills needed to deliver high-quality driver training themselves.
The training also placed a strong emphasis on practical teaching techniques. Trainers were introduced to simple, interactive methods, including driving-style demonstrations and live feedback while driving. This helps trainers engage drivers more effectively, strengthen their autonomy and motivation, and support the lasting transfer of safer and more efficient driving skills.
Building lasting training capacity
The project went beyond the delivery of a single training course.
IRU provided a Training of Trainers programme, training content, an initial knowledge test and an assessment of participants’ learning at the end of the action-based training. Successful participants received certification.
Materials were also developed for trainers to use after the programme, helping ensure that the knowledge and methodology can continue to be passed on to drivers in Tunisia.
In addition, IRU contributed to the establishment of a training programme adapted to young people and professional drivers, supporting the development of a broader and more sustainable training framework.
By strengthening the skills of trainers rather than focusing only on individual drivers, the project created a multiplier effect: trained instructors can continue delivering safe, efficient and eco-friendly driving techniques to new groups of professional drivers.
The initiative supports a more professional approach to driver training in Tunisia, combining road safety with lower operating costs and more environmentally responsible driving practices.
