Safe and reliable transport is key to unlocking access to education. In Senegal, IRU is helping connect children to opportunity.
IRU, in partnership with ORU Fogar, is supporting a school transport initiative aimed at improving access to education for children in Senegal’s rural and peri-urban areas.
The project focuses on providing safe, reliable and organised transport services to connect students with secondary, technical and vocational education. It aims to reduce dropout rates and improve attendance, particularly among girls.
In regions where distance and unsafe travel conditions remain major barriers to education, the initiative highlights the critical role of transport in enabling access to opportunities while enhancing road safety.
IRU is coordinating the initiative, mobilising partners and raising international visibility to scale up impact.
A key milestone has been reached with the mobilisation of a bus from De Angelis Bus, made possible thanks to IRU member ANAV.
The project is fully aligned with the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport and the 2030 Agenda, including Sustainable Development Goal 4 on quality education.
Further efforts are underway to attract additional donors and expand the initiative to reach more children across the region.
