IRU research into accident causation cited as WHO ministerial meeting spurs global action

20 Nov 2017

With the World Health Organization ministerial meeting on “the development of voluntary global performance targets for road safety” taking place this week, IRU’s European Truck Accident Causation study (ETAC) is cited in proposals to establish global objectives and targeted interventions.

The ETAC study was carried out by IRU and the European Commission, and significantly found human error to account for 85.2% of accidents involving trucks, 75% of which were caused by other road users.

Highlighting the importance of training drivers and supporting awareness among all road users, the research has helped shape a tangible strategy for fulfilling the goals of the UN’s Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020).
