IRU mourns Georgian member’s Honorary President, Alexandr Chkheidze

IRU is deeply saddened by the death of Georgian International Road Carriers Association’s (GIRCA) Honorary President, Alexandr Petrovich Chkheidze.

Alexandr Chkheidze was born in 1938 in Tbilisi, Georgia and spent his professional life contributing to the development of the transport sector.

He worked at the Georgian Ministry of Road Transport for over two decades before becoming the Minister of Transport for Georgia between 1990 and1992.

In 1992 he founded and took up leadership of GIRCA, which joined IRU as a member in 1993. From 1997 to 1998, Chkheidze chaired the IRU Liaison Committee to the Commonwealth of Independent States and in 2003, the IRU Liaison Committee to Eurasia.

He received a number of national and international awards during his career, recognising his work to promote excellence and professionalism in Georgia and beyond, including the IRU Order of Merit.
