World Bank/IRU Guide on road transport reform at Africa Transport Policy Program annual meeting

27 Feb 2017

The Africa Transport Policy Program (SSATP) annual meeting took place in Marrakech last week, offering a significant platform for the World Bank/IRU Guide to road transport services reform.

IRU’s lead in Africa, William Petty, presented the Guide, reinforcing its utility within the context of SSATP’s mission to promote safe, reliable, and cost-effective transport in Africa.

He commented,
“This Guide establishes how reform of national transport services can address the broader issues of development, sustainability and economic growth. If properly managed, change in Africa can happen quickly, because the road transport sector here is dynamic and flexible.”

The World Bank/IRU Guide is an important tool for governments, policy makers and transport regulators to unlock the potential of the road transport industry in order to combat poverty and generate sustainable economic development.

SSATP is an international partnership of over 40 African countries, Regional Economic Communities, continental institutions (African Union Commission), UN agencies (United Nations Economic Commission for Africa), public and private sector organisations, and international development agencies and organisations. SSATP is hosted by the World Bank’s Transport and ICT Global Practice.
