Driver shortage unites transport workers and employers

16 Oct 2018

Workers and employers come together to address driver shortage and working standards.

Speaking in front of trade union representatives from 168 countries at the Trade Unions’ World Congress in Singapore today, IRU Secretary General Umberto de Pretto, highlighted the critical value of human capital for the transport industry.

As a production tool of the global economy and to remain competitive, road transport needs to provide quality services that are fully compliant with highest standards, alongside driver training and qualifications.

However, while the workforce is a key asset within the value chain, driver shortage crisis is real.

IRU and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) will together urge action from governments to provide a level playing field for transport operators and ensure the implementation of and compliance with international standards.

Steve Cotton, General Secretary of the ITF, will be participating at the IRU World Congress in Oman on 8 November.
