China launches first intermodal TIR shipment

17 Apr 2026 · Prosperity

An intermodal TIR operation transporting car parts from China to Uzbekistan marks a new step in the expansion of the global transit system and cross-border logistics innovation in China.

China’s first intermodal TIR operation has successfully reached its destination and demonstrated the benefits of this approach.

The goods first travelled by rail from Xi’an, central China, to Kashgar North Station in Xinjiang, northwest China, before continuing by TIR truck from the Irkeshtam border crossing to Jizzakh, Uzbekistan.

Using TIR for the intermodal movement enabled faster loading and transfer at origin, transit points and border crossings, while reducing costs.

As part of an important innovation by China’s customs, this approach leverages the TIR system’s key features – including a single customs declaration, sealed transport and guarantee – to ensure smooth cargo movement across transport modes. The result is a more efficient and flexible logistics solution for international trade.

“We are very pleased to witness the successful launch of the first intermodal TIR operation in China,” said IRU Chief Representative for East and Southeast Asia Ran Wang.

“This operation is an important initiative to promote cross-border logistics facilitation and transport model innovation, and a clear sign of the growing use of TIR in the country,” he added.

The launch is expected to support the development of more diversified and efficient logistics corridors, particularly along Belt and Road routes, and further strengthen China–Central Asia connectivity.
