Intermodal teamwork offers green efficiencies

29 Jun 2018

IRU stresses the importance of harnessing the strengths of all transport modes to increase efficiency and so reduce carbon emissions at the Global Rail Freight Conference in Genova, Italy this week.

Calling for strengthened cooperation across the industry, including from governments, manufacturers, transport infrastructure providers and road transport operators, IRU outlined how modal integration is key to sustainability.

IRU cited the Slovenia to Iran intermodal TIR pilot operation, which considerably reduced transport time using TIR across a combination of modes including road, maritime and rail.

The presentation highlighted the efficiency gains resulting from the use of digital logistics tools like e-CMR, while underlining the importance of increased investments into eco driver training by the IRU Academy, and other industry innovations such as platooning.

Such measures have contributed to global efforts to implement the objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
