Argentina connects the trade chain across the Americas

1 Nov 2018

Argentina accedes to the TIR Convention, setting in motion the transport and trade facilitation benefits of TIR for the wider region.

While both Chile and Uruguay are signatories, Argentina’s decision to adopt TIR puts the country ever closer to improving cross-border connectivity, fostering regional integration and boosting global trade opportunities.

Daniel Indart, President of IRU member in Argentina, FADEEAC, comments, “Joining and implementing the TIR Convention has been a commitment we've made to improve and facilitate cross-border operations in order to become more efficient and competitive in international trade.”

The implementation of TIR will generate profound economic gains – cutting border waiting times in the region by as much as 50% – as highlighted in the Organization of American States’ study.

Secretary General of IRU, Umberto de Pretto says, “This is a critical milestone for unleashing transport and trade potential in the Americas and beyond. We look forward to working with our Argentine partners, notably FADEEAC, the Ministry of Transport and Argentine Customs, to implement the system swiftly and to see TIR trucks crossing the region’s borders.”

With the WTO’s Trade Facilitation Agreement putting a spotlight on TIR as an effective tool to harmonise customs transit systems, the decision comes thanks to ongoing commitment and efforts by the Government, Customs, other federal agencies, and FADEEAC leadership, all of whom IRU looks forward to working with, as TIR becomes operational.

IRU’s Senior Advisor for the Americas, Martin Rojas, adds, “We are delighted to announce this news ahead of the IRU World Congress, where we will celebrate the potential of road transport in the Americas together with Argentina’s transport leaders, who will join us to debate the future of trade – among other key issues for the industry and the region.”
