Malaysia: new driver training and certification programme

27 Oct 2026 · People

IRU and the Asian Institute of Logistics (ASIL) are establishing a new training and certification programme for professional drivers in Malaysia to advance road safety and supply chain efficiency.

IRU and ASIL are building on existing cooperation.

ASIL is an accredited IRU training institute that works with the IRU Academy on dangerous goods transport training and certification based on the UN ADR Agreement.

The new training and certification programme, set up under an ASIL–National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health partnership, will expand this cooperation to professional driver competence by leveraging IRU Examiner.

The programme will contribute to safer roads by raising driver skills and safety standards. A better-trained and certified driver workforce also supports industry efficiency, which strengthens the reliability and resilience of supply chains.

IRU Director of Certification and Standards Patrick Philipp said, “Professional drivers are at the heart of safe and efficient road transport. By establishing this programme with ASIL, IRU is helping ensure that drivers in Malaysia are trained and certified to recognised international standards. This will make roads safer, support the efficiency of the industry and, in turn, contribute to stronger supply chains."

ASIL CEO Subramaniam Arumugam said, "At ASIL, our mission is to equip the logistics and transport sector with competent, certified professionals. Together with IRU, and through our partnership with the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, we are establishing a programme that sets a clear standard for professional driver training in Malaysia. Skilled and safety-conscious drivers are essential to safer roads and to the efficient movement of goods, and we are proud to take this step."

The programme marks a further step in strengthening professional driver standards in Malaysia and supporting safer, more efficient road transport.
