Lights, camera, action: Iraq continues to cut EU–Middle East journey times

3 Dec 2025 · Prosperity

A recent operation transporting film and photography equipment highlights the growing importance of TIR in Iraq for unlocking efficient, secure and seamless intercontinental trade.

A TIR shipment from Hungary to Jordan has reinforced Iraq’s strategic position as a transit hub between the EU and the Middle East – drastically slashing traditional multimodal journey times by around 80%.

The shipment of film and photography equipment will be used to produce a promotional video about Jordan’s rich history and iconic heritage sites along its long trade routes.

The operation – conducted by a TIR operator from Romania, where IRU member the National Union of Road Hauliers from Romania represents the road transport industry – took around six days. Multimodal options typically take around five weeks.

“This operation reinforces how TIR can slash transit times for secure operations,” said IRU Senior Adviser for the Middle East and North Africa Rami Karout. “Moreover, it shows how TIR not only supports commercial trade but also cultural and creative industries, enabling projects that celebrate regional identity and tourism.”

Iraq’s location makes it a natural bridge for trade routes linking the EU with the GCC and the Levant. As regional economies seek greater integration, Iraq’s role as a transit hub is becoming increasingly critical for supply chain resilience and diversification.

With more countries adopting TIR and expanding its digital capabilities, the system is set to play an even greater role in shaping global trade corridors.
