Celebrating the guardians of global trade: International Customs Day 2026

26 Jan 2026 · People, Prosperity

IRU marks International Customs Day 2026, honouring the vital work of customs officers worldwide.

International Customs Day, celebrated every year on 26 January, is a global occasion to recognise the essential work of customs officers in keeping trade flowing, safeguarding goods, and protecting public revenue.

IRU Secretary General Umberto de Pretto said, “On this International Customs Day, we recognise and celebrate the work of customs officers and authorities around the world.”

“Where goods flow smoothly across borders, progress, prosperity and, ultimately, peace follow,” he added.

IRU, the world road transport organisation representing over 3.5 million transport companies across the globe, has partnered with customs authorities since the creation of TIR – the only global transit system – in 1949.

TIR makes cross-border transit and transport fast, efficient and secure, anchored by mutual trust between customs authorities and the global transport and trade communities.

IRU continues to support customs authorities worldwide through the expansion of TIR into new countries, digital innovations, and streamlined cross-border processes, backed by over EUR 60 billion in guarantees. This partnership ensures the global transport ecosystem remains efficient, secure and resilient, benefiting businesses and citizens alike.
