Saving cattle: swift action on live animal transport

4 Sep 2025 · Prosperity

Immediate help was needed. Fifty-two cattle were stuck at Morocco’s Tanger Med port. With a national holiday and weekend approaching, the animals and their drivers risked being stranded for days, facing serious welfare consequences and logistical disruptions.

In a spirit of true partnership, we worked once again with Animals’ Angels. Together with our members AMTRI (Morocco) and CETM (Spain), and the transport operator, we engaged with customs and other competent authorities in Morocco and Spain to find a rapid solution to two trucks held up at Morocco’s Tanger Med port.

Thanks to this close cooperation, the trucks were cleared the very same day. The cattle continued their journey safely, and the drivers could finally get back on the road.

“Saving animal lives while ensuring a smooth logistics chain is the perfect combination,” said IRU EU Advocacy Director Raluca Marian. “This case shows what can be achieved when we work hand in hand.”

IRU is deeply grateful to all who contributed to this outcome. For many years, we have worked on behalf of the industry to improve the conditions and efficiency of live animal transport. This case is another example of what effective collaboration can deliver.
