TIR operations from Türkiye via Syria resume, restoring key trade route

17 Dec 2025 · Prosperity

Movements under TIR from Türkiye to GCC markets through Syria have officially restarted, marking a major milestone for regional trade and international road transport after years of interruption.

The first TIR trucks have successfully transited Syria, formally confirming the resumption of TIR operations along this strategic corridor.

These initial movements demonstrate that TIR can now be used for secure, reliable and efficient transit through Syria.

Ahmet Sarı, the owner of Sarıtaş Lojistik, said, “After opening the Iraq corridor with the TIR system, the reopening of the Syria corridor under TIR is another major step for regional road transport.

“TIR provides the security and predictability needed for operations along sensitive routes. We thank IRU for its key role in enabling the safe reinstatement of transit through Syria.”

Mehmet Ramiz Kılınç, the owner of Seztaş Lojistik, said, “The resumption of TIR transit through Syria has restored another vital land link between Türkiye and GCC countries.

“TIR ensures secure cargo movements and smoother border procedures in Syria. We highly appreciate IRU’s strong support and leadership in reviving this strategic route.”

Erman Ereke, IRU’s General Delegate in Istanbul, said, “The return of TIR operations from Türkiye through Syria to GCC countries marks a long-awaited step.

“These first movements clearly demonstrate that TIR provides a secure, predictable and internationally trusted framework for transit, even along complex corridors.”

Transport operations via Syria under TIR are also critical for onward movements towards neighbouring markets, reinforcing uninterrupted land connectivity between Türkiye and the wider Middle East.

What is TIR?

Managed by IRU under a United Nations mandate, TIR lets you ship goods from one country to another, transiting as many as needed along the way, via a secure, multilateral, multimodal and mutually recognised system.

The goods are sealed at the point of origin and only reopened at their destination – regardless of how many national borders are crossed.

In essence, TIR allows trucks to cross borders efficiently and securely.

It has been proven to reduce border transit times by up to 92% and lower transport costs by up to 50%.
