As the EU looks to strengthen working conditions, invest in skills, and modernise infrastructure, IRU and UNTRR met EU Executive VP Roxana Mînzatu to discuss practical solutions for drivers and operators.
In a high-level meeting today, IRU, its member the National Union of Road Hauliers from Romania (UNTRR), and transport operators met with the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Skills, Education, Quality Jobs and Social Rights, Roxana Mînzatu, in Brașov, Romania.
Discussions focused on two urgent challenges: the chronic shortage of professional drivers and the wider transformation of the transport workforce, including the need for investment in skilling and upskilling, as the sector decarbonises.
IRU President and UNTRR Secretary General Radu Dinescu said, “Supporting road transport drivers and workers means supporting Europe’s economy and future.
“Industry, Member States and EU institutions must work together to invest in skills, improve working conditions, and make this essential profession more attractive for the next generation.
“Executive Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu’s leadership in this area is welcome and much needed.”
IRU EU Advocacy Director Raluca Marian said, “We were pleased to join Executive Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu to discuss how the EU can better support those who keep Europe moving: professional drivers and road transport companies. Her portfolio can bring tangible improvements to drivers and operators alike.”
“Practical support for better working conditions, including funding for parking and skills, is urgently needed to make the profession more attractive and sustainable. Europe must invest in its people,” she added.
Ensuring access to quality employment and equipping workers with the right skills is essential to keep goods and people moving while navigating change.
