Spanish solutions: which truck powertrain should you invest in?

9 Dec 2025 · Environment

How do different truck powertrains compare in terms of total cost of ownership (TCO) and CO₂ emissions in Spain? IRU presented the findings of its new Intelligence Briefing for the first time at a recent event in Zaragoza.

In today’s evolving economic and regulatory landscape, there are both opportunities and challenges in managing and optimising costs. TCO serves as a valuable tool for operators and shippers to guide their strategic investments.

IRU’s new Intelligence Briefing combines a TCO analysis with a CO₂ emissions assessment of different powertrains (diesel, CNG, LNG, BEV, FCEV, and HVO) in Spain. It is based on current national conditions and covers both regional and long-haul transport.

Speaking at the “Fuels for sustainable mobility in civil and military heavy transport” event, organised by Fundación Repsol, Fundación Corell and Fundación Ibercaja, IRU Strategic Planning & Project Portfolio Manager Natalia Corchado said, “With increasing regulatory pressure to decarbonise, operators, 90% of which are SMEs with razor-thin margins, face huge challenges.

“Achieving operations that are financially viable requires a careful strategic balance. However, to align with environmental goals and benefit from regulatory developments, it is equally important to integrate CO₂ emissions into strategic planning.”

In addition to breaking down each powertrain technology in terms of TCO and CO₂ emissions and comparing them with a classic diesel truck, the briefing also provides a TCO-CO₂ trade-off analysis, classifying powertrains into “win-win” and “lose-lose” categories.

“Our new report helps strike the right balance, reducing emissions while optimising TCO,” said Natalia Corchado. “To help operators cut costs and emissions even further, we also showcased the potential of efficiency levers.”

The new report forms part of the second edition of the IRU Intelligence Briefing on the TCO and CO₂ emissions of diesel and alternative powertrains across Europe. It is divided into seven country-specific briefings – France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Spain and the UK – and one comparative Intelligence Briefing analysing the results across all seven countries. They will be published over the course of December and January.
