IRU supports joint call to end Brenner transit restrictions

16 Apr 2026 · Prosperity

IRU and European road transport associations, including IRU members, have released a joint statement ahead of the upcoming court hearing on Austria’s anti-transit measures on the Brenner corridor.

IRU, together with national road transport associations from several EU countries, has released a joint statement ahead of a hearing before the Court of Justice of the European Union concerning Austria’s transit restrictions on the Brenner corridor. The proceedings relate to a legal challenge brought by Italy, supported by the European Commission, on the compatibility of these measures with EU law.

For several years, Austria has applied a range of unilateral transit restrictions on the corridor, including sectoral bans and traffic management measures. These have led to persistent disruptions to cross-border transport and supply chains along one of Europe’s key freight routes.

The measures have created operational uncertainty for operators and drivers, while placing sustained pressure on logistics flows between northern and southern Europe. Despite repeated exchanges at national and EU level, no coordinated solution has been reached.

The joint statement calls for the withdrawal of these measures and a resolution to the longstanding situation. It underlines the need to restore the proper functioning of the EU internal market and ensure the free movement of goods through proportionate and coordinated approaches.

IRU supports solutions that provide legal certainty and workable conditions for operators across Europe.
