FedEx Express joins move to TIR in GCC region

19 Oct 2022 · Prosperity

FedEx Express has successfully concluded its first TIR operation in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

One of the world’s largest express transport companies, FedEx Express, has completed its first TIR operation in the GCC. The general cargo consignment, originating in Dubai, has reached its final destination, the King Fahad International Airport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.

The TIR truck seamlessly crossed the Batha border in Saudi Arabia in just four hours. FedEx Express was able to significantly reduce its transport time by using the TIR express lane at the Batha border, as well as with the support of customs authorities and business-to-government TIR-IT integration with Saudi customs’ FASAH system.

IRU Director of TIR and Transit Services Tatiana Rey-Bellet congratulated FedEx Express for joining the TIR family in the Middle East, “It is a great pleasure to see an IRU member benefit from the TIR system in the GCC region.

“TIR continues to strengthen its status as an excellent border-crossing mechanism, allowing transport and logistics operators to save time and optimise their overall operational costs. We look forward to continuing this fruitful relationship with FedEx Express in the Middle East and beyond.”

Taarek Hinedi, Vice President of FedEx Express Middle East and Africa Operations, welcomed the opportunity presented by TIR, “At FedEx, we are always looking for ways to enhance our air and ground networks and improve our customer experience. With TIR, we will significantly improve our Middle East Road Network transit times and provide our customers and businesses with faster connectivity to Saudi Arabia and other key markets in the region.

“We look forward to continuing our journey with TIR and delivering an enhanced experience to our customers.”

What is TIR?

TIR is the only global transit system, enabling goods to be shipped from a country of origin, through transit countries, to a country of destination, via a secure, multilateral, multimodal and mutually recognised system, which also provides a financial guarantee for the payment of suspended duties and taxes. IRU manages the guarantee system.

It is the easiest, safest and most reliable way to move goods across multiple international borders, saving time and money for transport operators and customs authorities.
