Brazil Vice President meets IRU on Bioceanic Corridor, TIR, green logistics

27 Jun 2025 · Prosperity, Environment

Strengthening Brazil’s logistics, accelerating decarbonisation, and implementing the TIR system were at the heart of a high-level meeting between IRU, NTC&Logística and Brazil’s Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin.

In discussions led by IRU’s Senior Director of Strategy and Development, Vincent Erard, the parties explored how international best practices and public-private cooperation can unlock the full potential of the Bioceanic Corridor and advance sustainable mobility.

“IRU was founded in 1948 to restore trade and rebuild Europe,” said Vincent Erard. “At its core was the creation of trust, security and efficiency in cross-border transport – the very principles behind the TIR system.”

TIR, managed by IRU for over 75 years, allows goods to transit efficiently across borders under a harmonised customs framework. It reduces transit times by up to 60% and lowers border waiting times by up to 90%, helping cut emissions, improve driver conditions, and attract logistics investment.

Brazil’s flagship Bioceanic Corridor initiative resonates deeply with IRU’s mission. The Corridor will connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans running through Brazil as well as Argentina, Chile and Paraguay.

“The Bioceanic Corridor presents a unique opportunity for Brazil to become a regional transport and trade hub,” said Vincent Erard.

“But without harmonised border processes, its competitiveness will be undermined. TIR is a key enabler to deliver on the corridor’s promise.”

During the meeting, the Vice President placed strong emphasis on the ratification of TIR, identifying it as a key priority. He highlighted that the TIR system aligns with, and reinforces, Brazil’s commitment to streamlining customs procedures and modernising the regulatory framework.

According to the Vice President, the submission of the TIR accession process to the Brazilian Congress is fully consistent with the country’s current policy agenda.

A green corridor towards COP30

The conversation also focused on sustainability and the future of green logistics, in view of Brazil’s leadership role in hosting COP30 in Belém later this year.

IRU, NTC&Logística and the Vice President discussed opportunities to accelerate decarbonisation through the use of alternative fuels and efficiency measures, as recommended by the IRU Green Compact: a global roadmap to net-zero emissions in commercial road transport by 2050.

“Sustainability, improved working conditions for drivers, and enhanced logistics competitiveness go hand in hand,” said Vincent Erard.

“We welcome Brazil’s strong commitment to green investment and fostering trust, stability and secure frameworks for the private sector. We look forward to deepening cooperation with the Brazilian government to make road transport safer, greener and more efficient,” he concluded.
