Back-to-back: North Macedonia joins eCMR

13 May 2026 · Prosperity

The adoption of eCMR continues to gather momentum, with Albania having joined eCMR just a few weeks earlier.

North Macedonia has become the 41st country to join eCMR, the digital protocol to the United Nations CMR Convention.

The accession marks an important step towards fully paperless road freight transport in North Macedonia, creating the legal basis for the use of electronic consignment notes in international road transport operations.

The Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road (CMR), which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, provides legal certainty, harmonises transport documentation, and protects both transport operators and consignors engaged in international road transport.

eCMR builds on these advantages by digitalising consignment notes. It reduces administrative burdens, eliminates paper documents, accelerates invoicing processes and improves transparency and operational efficiency across supply chains.

The transition to electronic documentation also enhances coordination between all parties involved in transport operations, contributing to more efficient logistics services and stronger economic competitiveness.

IRU and its members will continue promoting eCMR as a key instrument to increase the speed, efficiency and security of international trade and road transport operations.
