IRU’s innovative initiatives to lead the sector into a sustainable and competitive future were key agenda items of the Goods Transport Council (CTM), held in Geneva today.
With opening remarks from president of IRU Goods Transport Council, Radu Dinescu, the meetings included presentations on decarbonisation projects, initiatives to tackle the global driver shortage issue, a recent study on driverless road freight transport and a report on the commercial vehicle of the future.
The ongoing, successful expansion of TIR – to new regions and countries worldwide – was outlined, with further development of the digital eTIR system a clear priority for the coming year, following successful pilot projects between Iran and Turkey. Finally, a report on the implementation of eCMR services and news of France’s recent accession, revealed strong momentum for implementing fully digital road transport operations.
Guest speaker, Dr Jorg Blechschmidt from FutureManagementGroup, looked at the trends and technologies that drive change in the road transport sector, and suggested that accepting change and preparing for new challenges is vital to the success of the industry. He concluded by saying that “driving change is certainly better than being changed” – referencing IRU’s leadership role in the fast changing road transport sector.
