The Netherlands’ national road transport licensing authority has joined IRU to support stronger industry representation, sustainability and digitalisation.
IRU welcomes the National and International Road Transport Organisation (NIWO) as its newest member.
NIWO is responsible for issuing Community and ECMT licences as well as driver attestations. It also distributes bilateral and ECMT quota authorisations, chairs the formal Dutch Delegation to the OECD’s International Transport Forum in Paris, and leads joint committees for road transport with third countries on behalf of the Netherlands.
In addition, NIWO issues TIR carnets on behalf of IRU member TLN. It works closely with Dutch road transport stakeholders, including IRU members TLN, evofenedex and KNV.
NIWO recently established a representation to the EU in Brussels, reflecting the growing importance of EU files for road transport. Through IRU, NIWO aims to share its knowledge and experience, contribute to joint positions towards EU institutions and access a broader international platform.
IRU Secretary General Habib Turki said, “We are delighted to welcome NIWO into the IRU family. NIWO brings deep institutional expertise in road transport licensing. Its membership will strengthen our collective work in the EU and beyond.”
NIWO Head EU and International Affairs Karin Jacobs said, “We strongly believe that joining IRU will create a win-win situation, particularly in the context of sustainability, innovation and digitalisation, as well as increasing resilience for the road transport sector in times of geopolitical challenges.”
