Enabling a pragmatic, operator-led automated mobility future

21 May 2025 · Innovation

Leading the dialogue on the future of automation in road transport at EUCAD 2025, IRU organised a workshop on AI and logistics, ensuring that the voice of operators was central to Europe’s cooperative, connected and automated mobility (CCAM) agenda.

IRU partnered with the European Commission and the European Partnership on CCAM at EUCAD 2025, bringing together EU policymakers, industry leaders, researchers and road authorities. Held in Ispra, Italy, the conference explored how CCAM technologies can support Europe’s digital and climate goals.

An IRU-organised workshop, part of the Horizon Europe-funded AIthena project, focused on explainable, human-centric AI solutions for logistics and freight transport. The session showcased how transport operators can lead innovation when supported by the right policy, funding and research frameworks. It demonstrated business-ready tools to support automation and digitalisation.

IRU also spoke on the panel “CCAM for logistics: are we ready to do business?”, alongside Volvo, DFDS and eX9. The discussion examined how CCAM technologies can move from pilot projects to practical deployment in logistics.

IRU Research and Innovation Manager Ted Zotos

IRU Research and Innovation Manager Ted Zotos said, “Operators are essential partners in making CCAM a reality. For deployment to succeed, it must solve real challenges, including driver shortages, decarbonisation and efficiency, while maintaining Europe’s competitiveness.”

IRU’s engagement at EUCAD 2025 reinforced its call for a pragmatic, operator-led CCAM agenda that delivers practical solutions, supports the workforce, and contributes to Europe’s broader mobility, climate and economic goals.
