Transport and development: The road to sustainability, prosperity and peace

Geneva | IRU event | Invitation only

A special event celebrating IRU’s 75th anniversary

Road transport services have always been crucial for economic and social development, driving prosperity, trade, social inclusion and ultimately peace. The sector underpins almost every Sustainable Development Goal.

However, rapid technological advances, geopolitical uncertainty and the climate crisis are now redefining road transport in all regions.

  • Can road transport continue to drive development and, at the same time, become fully carbon neutral?

  • Does the global community need to prioritise one over the other?

  • Can the road transport sector, the UN and its member states work together in better ways to deliver the SDGs?

For 75 years, IRU and its member organisations, the voice of 3.5 million mobility and logistics companies worldwide, have championed close engagement with governments, the UN and many other multilateral organisations to advance trade, prosperity, safety and sustainability.

This unique event will celebrate IRU’s 75 anniversary, bringing together IRU member associations and companies from more than 80 countries with global development, trade, transport and labour figures.

Participants are also cordially invited to a 75th anniversary cocktail with IRU members from 18:00 the evening before in central Geneva.

Accommodation

Unfortunately, there are no more rooms available with the special discount. However, if you need accommodation during your stay in Geneva, you can still book a room at the regular price via the InterContinental's website.

Transport to hotel

  • From Geneva Cornavin station to Hôtel InterContinental Genève:
Take bus number 5 (direction Geneve Airport) and get off at the “Intercontinental” stop.
  • From the airport to Hôtel InterContinental Genève:
Take bus number 5 (direction Thônex, Vallard) and get off at the “Intercontinental” stop.

We recommend taking public transport as a more sustainable option and we encourage you to offset your carbon emissions if you travel by plane.

You can find here projects certified by the UN that reduce, avoid or remove greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere.

IRU Charter 75

Road transport is the lifeline of economies and communities. This is never more true than in times of crisis.

Recent years have seen a global pandemic, wars and natural disasters. In every case and country, road transport stepped up to help the victims and those affected by these events.

Focusing on the sector’s response to these crises, the IRU Charter 75 reinforces the road transport community’s commitment to help rescue people, rebuild shattered communities, and make mobility networks and supply chains more resilient and better able to withstand future shocks.
