ITS and C-ITS capacity building for the future of mobility
CAPITAL – Collaborative capacity programme on ITS Training-education and liaison
The future of mobility looks more connected, safe and efficient. This will be due, to a large extent, to the increased use of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS).
The CAPITAL project gathers a community of professionals active in the field of ITS & C-ITS from both private and public sectors working on identifying gaps and knowledge needs related to the implementation of these technologies. The ultimate goal is to increase knowledge and improve the skills needed for the deployment of ITS and C-ITS while at the same time raising awareness of the benefits and services available and opening new paths for career development.
IRU's role
IRU has been analysing the potential of ITS and C-ITS applications for the road transport sector and their potential benefits since a few years now. The IRU report “Commercial Vehicle of the Future” published in 2017 highlights the key role ITS and C-ITS can play in achieving fully sustainable truck operations.
In the CAPITAL project, IRU is bringing its expertise and the views of end users – road transport operators and professional drivers – in the development of training courses, recommendations and materials. Two of the courses available on the project’s online training platform are given by IRU tutors.
“A wider use of ITS and C-ITS would lay the groundwork for greater innovation with significant benefits in terms of efficiency, safety and environment for both goods and passenger transport. We are very glad to be part of this project which is guiding our industry in this direction.”
Oleh SHCHURYK, Manager – Research & Innovation
Project results
IRU together with the partners of the project - ITS organisations, government and industry - developed an online training platform with courses tackling all aspects related to the understanding, implementation and use of ITS and C-ITS. The courses are freely available and address different types of audiences – from beginner level to advanced level of understanding of ITS and C-ITS.
The CAPITAL Online Training Platform comprises 9 online courses on the following topics:
Introduction to ITS and C-ITS
ITS and C-ITS user services (IRU instructor)
Traffic Management Center and roadside technologies for ITS
Standards, architectures and communication technologies for ITS and C-ITS
Impact assessment of ITS and C-ITS systems
Financial incentives and business and procurement models for C-ITS deployment
Cost-benefit analyses of ITS services (IRU instructor)
Guidance in deploying ITS and C-ITS
Information security, data protection and privacy
The access to the platform is free of charge and everyone interested in learning more about ITS and C-ITS is encouraged to enrol to the online courses. Besides courses, users also have access to video materials, quizzes and supporting reading materials. Project partners are continuously working on updating the platform.
