IRU Observations on the European Commission Strategy for Reducing Heavy Duty Vehicles’ Fuel Consumption and CO2 Emissions - 2014

In May 2014, the European Commission published its Strategy for Reducing Heavy Duty Vehicles’ Fuel Consumption and CO2 Emissions which contains proposals for a number of short, medium and long term measures to reduce the carbon footprint of Heavy Duty Vehicles, including a proposal for a harmonised methodology to measure the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from newly type approved heavy duty vehicles in the EU. The IRU Observations welcome the publication of this Strategy and provide general observations on this Strategy and on the different proposed measures, including the harmonised measurement system, eco-driving, energy taxation, alternative fuels and weights and dimensions. They also include a number of proposals for other measures which the European Commission Strategy does not list, such as active support for the many industry-led initiatives to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
