Driver Shortage Report 2023 Freight – Europe
Europe Truck Driver Shortage Report 2023

Why can’t the European trucking industry attract more drivers? Is it a salary issue? Are there any solutions to the shortage?

Europe has over 230,000 unfilled truck driver positions. Without significant action, it is projected to reach 745,000 – due to driver retirements alone.

IRU’s full 2023 Europe Freight Driver Shortage Report provides regional and national level breakdowns of the chronic shortage of truck drivers, based on a survey of more than 1,000 haulage companies across EU-27 countries, Norway and the UK.

The report further unpacks the economic, legislative and demographic trends shaping the shortage of truck drivers, the barriers to entry, the challenges limiting its attractiveness, as well as the solutions implemented in response.

On solutions and best practices, the report features an array of actions by road transport associations and governments – as well as leading transport companies such as CEVA Logistics, Scania and Truckfly by Michelin.
