Greening fleets

Yes to greening, No to mandates

The European Commission is considering proposing an EU law that would force road freight operators or their clients (shippers) to buy, operate, or otherwise use a fixed share of zero-emission vehicles, which means electric or hydrogen trucks.

This initiative, which is called Greening Corporate Fleets, is intended to support EU manufacturers in selling zero-emission trucks by making sure that transport operators will buy them.

There is an urgent need to send a strong signal to the European Commission that the road freight ecosystem does not need and does not want such an obligation. The decarbonisation of road freight is already taking place and it will increasingly take place when the financial and infrastructure conditions are ready and when the type of operation performed is compatible with these types of vehicles.

With your signature, you are invited to express a clear NO to any EU initiative that would force road transport players to buy zero-emission vehicles.

The petition is now closed.

5,302 transport operators and shippers from across the EU have signed the online petition opposing the European Commission’s initiative to introduce mandatory zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) purchasing targets – while reaffirming their firm commitment to decarbonising road freight.

Based on the petition’s outcome, IRU has formally conveyed this clear and united message to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The letter is available here.

We call on President von der Leyen to reconsider this approach and support reversing the intention to impose mandatory ZEV purchasing targets on any actor in the free-market value chain.

Thank you to IRU member federations and all the companies and other associations that made their voices heard.
