Join the IRU Working Group on Cargo Crime to help shape a coordinated, industry-wide response – while gaining early access to intelligence, best practices, and visibility as a leader on the issue.
Cargo crime is one of the top threats facing today's road transport supply chain, with a risk level now rated critical:
- 157,000+ incidents recorded across 129 countries between 2022 and 2024
- ~70% of reported incidents worldwide target trucks
- Globally, food and beverage products are the most targeted commodity (14% of incidents), followed by agricultural products (8%) and electronics (6%), while insider involvement features in approximately 22% of reported thefts worldwide
Beyond the financial toll, cargo crime carries a real human cost for drivers and is made harder to tackle by fragmented policing, jurisdictional gaps, and the growing digitisation of logistics.
The Working Group will build a shared, evidence-based understanding of how cargo crime happens, map existing solutions and best practices, and deliver concrete recommendations. Activities kick off on 15 October 2026, with three working sessions running through April 2027 across three streams:
- Problem sizing & market trends – date to be confirmed
- Solutions mapping & best practices – date to be confirmed
- Recommendations & next steps – date to be confirmed
Findings will be presented at the next CTM meeting in May 2027 for approval.
