Driving health forward: healthcare for truck drivers across borders

What is everyday life like for long-distance drivers in terms of their health?

Driving health forward healthcare for truck drivers across borders

On June 3, 2026, from 09:00 to 17:00, this question will be the focus of the event organised by the Section on Prevention in Transportation of the International Social Security Association (ISSA), in cooperation with the German Social Accident Insurance Institution for Commercial Transport, Postal Logistics and Telecommunication, BG Verkehr.

This hybrid symposium tackles a challenge that affects the heartbeat of our economy: the health, safety and everyday living conditions of the long-haul drivers who keep Europe moving. What influence do access to medical care and the ability to create safe, healthy living conditions have on their well-being – and ultimately on road safety?

The symposium takes a close look at life on the road:

  • What happens when a driver, working for a German company, needs urgent medical help abroad?
  • What is everyday life like for long-haul drivers?
  • What support do companies and freight forwarders already offer to truck drivers?
  • Which cross-border models, partnerships or services exist – and how can they be improved?

Europe faces a persistent driver shortage. To attract and retain skilled workers, working and living conditions that genuinely support their health are needed – no matter where the road takes them. Better access to healthcare is not only a social responsibility; it also strengthens companies, improves safety, and keeps the workforce healthy. But it requires cross-border collaboration.

At the symposium, practical solutions that already make a difference today will be highlighted: from international care services to emerging telemedicine solutions that allow drivers to access medical expertise, even when far from home.

Broader health protection programmes will be showcased, along with innovative company initiatives that support employees working in cross-border transport.

These insights will be shared by expert speakers with hands-on experience from across Europe.
