IRU 70 years anniversary - A skateboarder’s eye on road transport

A skateboarder’s eye on road transport

My name is David Couliau and I love the road! I’ve explored it with my skateboard for over 30 years but… now I’m hitting the road to explore IRU’s world.

When I was asked to be part of IRU’s 70th birthday, I didn’t know anything about the International Road Transport Union. But as a former pro skateboarder, the road means so much to me. Just like surfers, skateboarders are always traveling to find exciting new spots to skate on. Exploring the world, meeting new people, discovering other cultures… our lifestyle is all about the sense of freedom that only the road can give you.

Yes, skateboarding is an “urban sport”, but jumping from streets to roads feels natural. My feelings about concrete are as strong as those of truck drivers about asphalt.

I’m a filmmaker and photographer as well. These passions started in the 90s, to show skateboard performances, but also the lifestyle that goes with it. So, of course, I’m going to film the amazing IRU members who make the road.

As I go all the way from Paris to Oman for the IRU World Congress, I’m going to tell their side of the story and of the road. So you can see how IRU helps make road transport and the life of those on the road better.

I’ve got my skateboard and my camera… I’m ready to help celebrate IRU’s 70th birthday. It’s time to open the road to open the world!
