The IRU-Emirates Driving Company panel at DRIFTx Abu Dhabi explored the latest AI and digitalisation trends advancing the safety, efficiency and sustainability of road transport.

What concrete digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives is the road transport industry piloting to enhance mobility services? How can companies use data to proactively identify and mitigate safety risks? What are the potential benefits and challenges of using AI-driven systems for personalised learning experiences and skills assessments?

The IRU-Emirates Driving Company (EDC) panel at DRIFTx Abu Dhabi focused on emerging questions given the rise of digitalisation and AI.

The panel, moderated by Cristiana Pace (Enovation Consulting), featured Enes Redja (Performise Labs), Daniel Avdagic (FAI Driving, Metaverse Group), George Zakhem (EDC), and Patrick Philipp (IRU).

The panellists highlighted that while vehicle autonomy is becoming a reality on dedicated infrastructure, significant investment is required for autonomous vehicles to operate on public infrastructure alongside other road users.

Furthermore, the panellists highlighted that while AI will accelerate the roll-out of autonomous vehicles, data-driven solutions exist today to further improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of current road transport operations.

IRU Director of Certification and standards Patrick Philipp said, “Data-driven approaches empower companies and individuals to make informed choices, leading to a safer, more efficient and greener transport system.”

“IRU champions excellence in road transport. We have developed a set of standards and certification programmes to capitalise on data’s educational and capacity-building role,” he added.

Using real-time data to monitor skills development and ensure performance standards are always met, RoadMasters, IRU’s risk and talent management solution, provides a comprehensive analysis for evaluating professional drivers’ skills profile.

All assessment and training information are subsequently compiled in RoadMasters’ digital dashboards, allowing companies to identify skills gaps, measure progress, and implement targeted action.

IRU advances insights, grounded in data, to boost road transport’s safety, efficiency and sustainability with resources and programmes such as the Intelligence Platform and Green Compact.
