Jean Todt spurs action on road safety at address to IRU members

10 Nov 2017

The United Nations Special Envoy for Road Safety and President of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), Jean Todt, was keynote speaker at the IRU General Assembly today, bringing his unique insight into collective action on road safety.

A former rally co-driver and CEO of Ferrari, Mr Todt’s presence is an endorsement of IRU’s and the wider commercial road transport industry’s crucial role in leading the campaign to tackle road safety.

Jean Todt said,
“Road safety is a global issue, requiring a global effort. With activities in over 100 countries and its wide-reaching network, IRU can play a crucial role in helping us achieve our shared goals for safer roads.”

Prioritising training and innovation, with a growing number of projects in these areas, IRU recently attended FIA’s high level panel for road safety at meetings in Paris. The invitation to Mr Todt today builds on that momentum for global action and reinforces the need for a shared responsibility to effect change.

IRU’s message that every accident is one too many, calls for a holistic approach, targeting the main causes of accidents, and involving all relevant sectors including transport, police, education, health and insurance.

With 85% of accidents involving commercial vehicles caused by human behaviour, the importance of training and sharing best practice are critical. IRU continues to work with a wide range of partners on innovative technologies and processes to promote road safety through the professionalisation and modernisation of industry services.
