World Bank releases Global Mobility Report today

19 Oct 2017

Following the adoption of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the World Bank today launches the Global Mobility Report (GMR), examining how transport can drive sustainability targets.

IRU has been actively involved in the drafting process of the GMR, with contributions made to chapters on efficiency and universal access. Highlighting the relationship between cross-border connectivity and economic prosperity, IRU has put the spotlight on trade and transport facilitation through the implementation of tried and tested UN Conventions.

The next steps for a follow-up GMR, which will focus on transport performance measurements, will include efforts to incorporate tangible services and tools, such as TIR and e-CMR, as sustainability implementation indicators.

The first joint report of the multi-partner Sustainable Development for All (SuM4All) initiative, the GMR calls for the need to respond to the increasing demand for mobility with transportation that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. It covers all modes of transport, including road, air, maritime and rail.

As a member of the SuM4All Efficiency Working Group, IRU is part of the global effort to ensure that the transport sector meets the mobility demands of today without compromising the needs of future generations. The report defines “sustainable mobility” as based on four global objectives: universal access, efficiency, safety and green mobility.
