Road transport role crucial in Brexit negotiations

28 Mar 2017

The decision by the United Kingdom to leave the European Union will have many practical implications for international road transport. As the UK triggers Article 50 of the Treaty of the European Union, IRU is ready to bring the industry’s voice into the negotiating process. Road transport operators on both sides of the channel have the in-depth knowledge and understanding to help properly address the multitude of complex issues on the table.

Road transport is the lifeblood of trade, mobility, economic prosperity, and jobs. The road transport industry needs clarity on this huge change in order to facilitate proper business planning for transport operators. Similarly, there must be a sufficient transition period to allow all operators to plan and adapt to any newly negotiated regime.

No deal is not an option for thousands of road passenger and freight operators and their customers, the businesses and citizens of Europe. Road transport is too important to be left to chance.
