EU driver rest-time rules take the spotlight

27 Sep 2017

Driving and rest rules are in focus at IRU organised European Parliament discussions on issues raised by the Mobility Package proposals.

The driving and rest-time rules of commercial drivers in the European Union are one of the areas addressed by European Commission proposals for new regulations as part of their Mobility Package.

IRU organised a working breakfast this week, for members to meet with European Parliament representatives who are working closely on the issue.

Discussions were positive and focused on the ban on drivers taking their weekly rest in cabins, the need for secure and comfortable commercial vehicle parking, and the ‘return home’ clause contained in the proposals.

The need for the 12-day derogation for drivers rest days for coach tourism was also discussed highlighting the difference between coach services and freight operations and the need for specific regulations for each sector.

Members, supported by IRU, met with: Wim van de Camp MEP, the rapporteur on the file and coordinator for the European Peoples Party group; Isabella De Monte MEP, shadow rapporteur for the Socialists & Democrats group; and Matthijs van Miltenburg MEP, shadow rapporteur for the Alliance of Liberals & Democrats in Europe group.
