Expert group looks to improve how dangerous goods are transported

6 Mar 2018 Geneva

IRU’s Group of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (GEMD) met recently to focus on necessary amendments to the UN ADR Agreement governing the international transport of hazardous materials.

In terms of improving road safety, the group discussed theory based online training courses for drivers of dangerous goods, which would complement hands-on learning to ensure drivers are trained to the highest standards.

Bearing in mind that the preferred truck for transporting dangerous goods is a diesel powered truck, GEMD also discussed the impact of new vehicle propulsion technologies, the ban of diesel vehicles in cities and the advent of autonomous vehicles in relation to the transport of dangerous goods. Lastly, GEMD discussed the intermodal transport of dangerous goods and exchanged views on expanding the ADR Convention.
