IRU Position on tyre pressure monitoring systems, (2010)
While supporting innovations and technologies that may improve road safety and law enforcement, the IRU advocates careful analysis of all advanced safety systems to avoid misinterpretation of real market needs and the consequences for road transport. Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) should only be used on a voluntary basis and further harmonisation and standardisation, as well as adequate infrastructure and training, are therefore a prerequisite. Liability issues should also be considered in the development process of the TPMS, as such devices may be subject to technical failure.
