IRU Position on Intelligent Vehicle Systems - 2011
The IRU favours the use of Intelligent Vehicle Systems for the road transport sector as long as they provide significant measurable safety, environmental and economic benefits. Intelligent Vehicle Systems must be standardised, harmonised and interoperable, and used on a voluntary basis, if possible. They must be applied to the right classes of vehicles and coupled with the appropriate equipment and adequate infrastructure. These systems should be automatically turned off in specific circumstances, such as city traffic conditions, and must not remove the driver’s responsibilities in driving the vehicle.
