IRU Position on a European Commission (EU) Proposal for a Regulation on freight transport supply chain security, (2006)
The proposal for a regulation on freight transport supply chain security is intended to increase the level of security without impeding the free flow of trade and establish a common framework for a systematic European approach. The IRU supports the idea of setting up a security framework but believes that this framework should be based on existing schemes to lower the costs imposed on the road transport industry. The EU should harmonise legislation and ensure an interface between existing security systems as the security level in the supply chain is a Public-Private-Partnership type of undertaking. Industry initiatives, such as the IRU Road Freight Transport Security Guidelines, should be replicated.
