IRU backs EU road safety drive

29 Mar 2017

IRU backs the Malta declaration and pledge by EU governments to cut road accident fatalities by 50% between 2020 and 2030 and continues to support initiatives that make Europe’s roads safer. The latest figures from the European Commission show that every year around 25,000 people are killed on Europe’s roads. Despite continuing improvements in reducing the number of fatalities and serious injuries, for road transport professionals even one accident is one too many.

The ambition to cut road fatalities can only be achieved by working together with the road transport industry. IRU welcomes the proposal by UN special envoy, Jean Todt, to create a road safety fund to support large scale projects and ambitious targets. IRU remains committed to reducing the number and severity of accidents involving commercial vehicles. IRU Academy is continuing to address the single biggest cause of accidents - human behaviour – through its ongoing programme of training courses.
