Road is key player in efficient logistics
The EC's Logistics Action Plan sets the right goals but misses some vital solutions
The IRU is encouraged by the priorities set out in the EU Commission's Freight Transport Logistics Action Plan. The document recognises that modern societies cannot survive or achieve sustainable development without efficient logistics chains and that the best way to achieve this is to give industry the means but also the freedom to attain them.
Bertil Dahlin, President of the IRU’s EU Goods Transport Liaison Committee said the “Freight Transport Logistics Action Plan is a positive step towards the vision of co-modality as set out in the mid-term review of the 2001 White Paper. However, this draft plan, which is clear sighted in so many other respects, fails to recognise that road transport plays the most vital role in creating efficient supply chains and intermodal transport. Consequently the Action Plan lacks the commitment and follow up initiatives to facilitate road freight to enable the plan to succeed’’.
