The IRU "Guide to Sustainable Development" (2000) |
The IRU Guide to Sustainable Development was a logical next step in implementing the IRU Agenda. This practical publication is addressed to the national road transport associations and, more especially, to road transport operators. The Guide summarises pioneering national action programmes, and sets out a range of action programmes in practical modules, to facilitate tailor-made measures and programmes, adapted to varying national circumstances. The objective of the Guide is to encourage as many transport operators as possible to implement Sustainable Development practices.
Again, the road transport industry does not start from zero. In fact, subsequent to Agenda 21 and the signing of the IRU Charter in 1996, some of the IRU member associations quickly moved to implement action programmes to achieve Sustainable Development:
These pioneering national action programmes served as the basis for the IRU Modules presented in the Guide. Each Module outlines a specific action, which a national association can adopt to help implement sustainable development principles at transport operator level and improve the operator's image and environmental credibility.
