Accidents - the balance-sheet
It is nonetheless true that some of these accidents may be serious because of the greater mass of commercial vehicles and the number of passengers carried (in the case of buses and coaches). Coaches are only involved in a very low proportion of road accidents and their passengers travel much more safely than by private car (27 times safer in the European Union). Being involved in an accident does not mean being responsible for it. The IRU and the European Commission are co-funding a European Study designed to provide statistically reliable data on the causes of accidents involving trucks. Work started on 1 April 2004 and the study is expected to take two years to complete. |
